What it costs, in full
From €150 per group, per day — not per person
- Licensed local guide for the whole day included
- Private car and driver, hotel or port pick-up and drop-off included
- Planning, timed entries and the priority-entrance tickets included
- Museum and palace entrance tickets at the gate price, no markup
- Lunch, drinks and anything you choose to buy not included
- Tips for your guide and driver customary, entirely up to you
Two people or six, the tour price is the same — it is the day you are hiring, not a seat. Entrance tickets are the only thing quoted separately, because museum prices change and because some parties add the Harem or the Cistern and others do not; we buy them in advance at the price on the gate and add them to your quote before you decide anything. Everything is quoted in euros, and nothing is paid until the day is agreed.
How the day runs
Timings below are the ones we actually use, not a brochure. Everything here is movable — it is your day, and your guide will happily rebuild it over breakfast.
-
08:00
Meet at the Galataport terminal
This example is for a ship that docks at 07:00 with all-aboard at 17:30, and every time below is counted back from that 17:30. Your guide meets you as you come out of the terminal, the car is waiting a few steps away, and the plan for your call is already on paper.
-
08:30
The Hippodrome
About twenty minutes across the Golden Horn, and we start in the open, on the old chariot track, with the Egyptian obelisk and the Serpent Column. It is open space at any hour, so it fills the half hour before the monuments open instead of a wait in a line.
-
09:00
Hagia Sophia
A few steps away, and we are at the first great monument before most of the city's visitors. Foreign visitors now see Hagia Sophia from the upper gallery on its own ticketed route, and your guide already holds those tickets.
-
10:15
The Blue Mosque
A working mosque, so visits close around the prayers, and your guide knows that day's times. On a Friday it admits visitors only in the afternoon, so we swap it with the bazaar hour and nothing is lost.
-
11:15
The Basilica Cistern
Down the steps into the sixth-century water palace, cool on the hottest port day and the stop children tend to remember. Prefer Topkapı Palace instead? Tell us and the afternoon is reshaped around it.
-
12:15
Lunch in Sultanahmet
Wherever you like. Your guide suggests a few good places at different prices and, if you would rather keep moving, a quick lunch keeps an hour in hand for later.
-
13:30
The Grand Bazaar, the hour we can cut
We put the bazaar last on purpose. Browse at your leisure, or if you would like to see a carpet, leather or jewelry atelier, we are glad to arrange an established, fully insured one; you take as long as the clock allows and are never obliged to buy. If the roads look slow, this is the hour that shrinks, not your margin. Closed on Sundays, when the Spice Bazaar takes its place.
-
15:30
The car leaves for Galataport
This is the fixed point of the day, and we do not move it to fit in one more thing. The drive is usually about twenty minutes; the rest of the time to all-aboard is margin, kept for Istanbul's traffic rather than spent on it.
-
16:00
Back at the terminal, ninety minutes early
Dropped at the Galataport terminal with an hour and a half before all-aboard, time to stroll the waterfront promenade or simply be back on board without a single glance at your watch.
What's included
- A licensed local guide for your whole time ashore, in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian, Italian or German
- Private air-conditioned car and driver for the day, so the way back to the ship never depends on finding a taxi
- Meeting at the Galataport terminal, and drop-back at the terminal well before your all-aboard time
- Skip-the-line priority entrance — tickets bought in advance, at the gate price, before your ship docks
- Planning built backward from your all-aboard time, with your ship's real arrival checked on the morning
- A plan you can change on the day: linger, skip, swap a monument, and the clock still holds
Not included
- Museum entrance tickets — we buy them in advance at the gate price, with no markup, and add them to your quote
- Lunch and drinks
- Tips for your guide and driver — customary, but entirely up to you
- Anything you decide to buy
Priority access · included
Skip the line at every gate
On a port day a ticket line is not an inconvenience, it is a monument you lose. So your guide has the Hagia Sophia gallery tickets, and the Cistern or Topkapı tickets if they are in your plan, bought before your ship has even docked, at the official price with nothing added. You walk to the priority entrance while the morning is still cool, and the hours we save at the gates become the margin we keep for the drive back.

- Skip-the-line tickets — bought before your day, never at the gate with you standing in the line
- Fast pass at the busiest sites — the priority lane wherever a site operates one
- Priority entrance in every region — Istanbul, Ephesus, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and everywhere else we guide
- Nothing added to the tickets — we add nothing on the fast-pass tickets. You pay exactly the official price charged at the entrance, set by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism or the administration that runs the site
To be precise about what this is: we skip the ticket line, not the security check, and no agency can override a site's own capacity limits.
Where we meet, and what happens if plans change
- Meeting point: The Galataport cruise terminal in Karaköy, as you come out after passport control. Your guide is there before the time on the ticket, not after it.
- Starts: as soon as you are off the ship and through the terminal. We set the time from your ship's actual arrival, not the brochure's, and move it if the ship is late.
- Ends: back at the Galataport terminal at least an hour before your all-aboard time. In the example below that is 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
- Group size: private — only your party, never a shared minibus.
- Language: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian, Italian or German. Tell us which when you write, and your guide will be licensed in that language.
- Cancellation: you pay nothing to book, so there is nothing to lose. Tell us as early as you can and we will move the day or cancel it, at no cost.
Ships berth alongside the quay at Galataport and passengers leave through the underground terminal. Your guide waits for you as you come out after passport control. The exact spot depends on the berth your ship is given, so we confirm it by email before your call.
Shopping, if you would like to
Türkiye’s crafts are one of the pleasures of being here, and many guests ask to see a carpet, leather or jewelry atelier while they are in Istanbul. If you would like to, we are glad to include one — we use only established, fully insured workshops of the kind the cruise lines recommend, where you are welcome to watch the craft, enjoy the tea and take as long as you like. Nobody will hurry you and nobody will press you to buy. And if you would rather give the whole day to the sights, simply say so and we will. Read our guide to shopping in Istanbul.
A Galataport shore excursion is a private day in Istanbul for cruise guests: a licensed guide and a private car meet you at the terminal, take you to the old city, and bring you back at least an hour before all-aboard. It costs from €150 per group, not per person. If you are still working out what fits in your hours ashore, start with our Istanbul shore excursion guide, which explains the port, the visa rules and what fits in four, six or ten hours. This page is the day itself.
How does the Galataport shore excursion get you back on time?
By planning the day from its end. A day can be planned forward from the gangway, to see how far it gets; we plan ours from your all-aboard time and count back, so the return is fixed before anything else is. Here is the example from the itinerary above, read the right way round:
| Counting back | Time | Why it sits there |
|---|---|---|
| All-aboard | 17:30 | Set by your ship and printed in its daily program |
| Back at the terminal | 16:00 | Ninety minutes of margin; we plan for an hour or more on every call |
| Car leaves the old city | 15:30 | A drive of about twenty minutes, with the rest kept for traffic |
| The flexible hour | 13:30 to 15:30 | The Grand Bazaar, the one item we can shorten or cut |
| The monuments | 08:30 to 12:15 | The Hippodrome, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Cistern, before the crowds |
| Meet at Galataport | 08:00 | Set from your ship's real arrival and the time the terminal takes |
Three habits keep that promise. We build in a buffer and never spend it on one more sight. We know the traffic: your guide and driver work these roads and know which hours clog the Galata Bridge and the shore road. And we never cut it fine: the car leaves at its time even if you are enjoying yourselves, because a relaxed walk back on board is part of a good day ashore.
Should you book a private shore excursion or the ship's own tour?
Both are good ways to see Istanbul, and we would rather you chose well than chose us. The ship's excursion has one advantage we cannot match, and it deserves to be said plainly: cruise lines typically wait for their own tours if they run late. Ours carry no such guarantee from the ship, so the margin is our job, which is why this whole page is about the clock.
| The ship's excursion | Our private Galataport day | |
|---|---|---|
| Who comes | A coach shared with other passengers | Only your party |
| What you see | A route set in advance | Your choice, and changeable on the day |
| Pace | The group's | Yours: linger at the mosaics, skip what does not interest you |
| If the day runs late | The ship typically waits for its own tours | We plan the margin so it never has to |
| Price | Per person | From €150 per group, so families and friends share one price |
If a guaranteed wait matters more to you than anything else, book the ship's tour; we would say so ourselves. If you want a smaller, private day with a guide talking only to you, and the freedom to decide what to see, this is the day for you.
What does the Galataport shore excursion cost?
From €150 per group, per day — not per person. That covers your licensed guide, the private car and driver, the meeting and drop-back at the terminal, and all the planning. Entrance tickets are the only thing quoted separately, because museum prices change and not every party chooses the same monuments.
| What you are quoted | How it works |
|---|---|
| From €150 per group, per day | Guide, private car and driver, terminal pick-up and drop-back, and the plan built around your ship |
| Entrance tickets | Bought in advance at the gate price, with no markup: Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, or Topkapı Palace if you choose it |
| Lunch, drinks and tips | Outside the price. Tips for your guide and driver are customary, and entirely at your discretion |

Which day of the week is your ship in Istanbul?
Your call date decides a few swaps, and we make them before you land rather than on the day:
- Friday: the Blue Mosque admits visitors only in the afternoon, so the bazaar moves to the morning and the mosque to after lunch.
- Tuesday: Topkapı Palace is closed. That only matters if you chose it over the Cistern; the Süleymaniye Mosque is the usual swap.
- Sunday: the Grand Bazaar is closed, as it is for the two Bayram holidays. The Spice Bazaar, open daily, takes the last hour instead.
- Monday: Dolmabahçe Palace is closed, which only matters on a long call where you add it.
What if your call is shorter, or overnight?
The day shrinks or grows from the same rule: the return is fixed first. With about six hours ashore we keep Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome and the Blue Mosque, and let the Cistern or the bazaar go. With four or five hours we would rather stay close to the port, with Galata Tower, the Galata Bridge and the Spice Bazaar, than rush the old city. On an overnight call the first day can be this one, with the evening free in Karaköy and Galata, and the second morning can be our Ottoman Palaces tour or a private Bosphorus boat that leaves from close to the ship. Our guide to shore excursions in Istanbul has the full table of what fits in each length of call.
Where exactly do we meet at Galataport?
Galataport is Istanbul's cruise port, on the Karaköy waterfront of the Bosphorus. Ships tie up alongside the quay, so there is no tender boat, and passengers go through passport control in an underground terminal. Your guide waits as you come out, and the car is a few steps away. We confirm the exact spot by email before your call, because it depends on your berth.
What to bring ashore
- The documents your ship tells you to take ashore, since you may be asked for them at the terminal on the way back as well.
- Shoulders and knees covered for the mosques, and a scarf for women; see what to wear in Istanbul.
- Flat shoes: Sultanahmet is cobbled.
- A card for lunch and a little Turkish lira for tea.
Not on a ship? The same day runs from any hotel as our Best of Istanbul tour, and long airport connections have the layover tour. Otherwise, see all our private Istanbul tours, or send us your ship, your date and your all-aboard time, and we will send back a plan that ends on time.

What you'll see
About the reviews you see here. Every quote on this website is a message a guest actually sent us, printed word for word. We do not write them, we do not edit them, and we do not have a TripAdvisor, Viator or GetYourGuide page to send you to, because we have never sold through those platforms — so there is no star rating for us to show you. We would rather tell you that than put stars on a page and hope you do not check.
