Skip-the-line tickets in Istanbul are simply tickets bought before you arrive, so you walk past the ticket-office line and straight to the entrance. At the city's busiest sights that line is the long one, and in high season it can cost you the better part of an hour. Here is what gets skipped and what does not, where it matters most, what it costs, and how it works on every tour we run.

What does skip the line mean in Istanbul?

At Istanbul's big ticketed sights there are usually two waits. The first is the ticket office, where you queue to buy; on a summer morning at Hagia Sophia or Topkapı Palace this is the long one. The second is the entrance itself, a bag scan and a turnstile that every visitor goes through and that usually moves quickly. A skip-the-line ticket takes away the first wait. Because the ticket is already bought, you go straight to the entrance.

You will see the same idea sold under several names: skip-the-line tickets, fast pass, fast-track entry, priority entrance. They all describe arriving with the ticket already in hand, and using the priority or group lane wherever a site operates one. Which Istanbul sights have ticket lines?

Not every famous sight in Istanbul has a ticket line to skip, and a good plan knows the difference. This is how it looks at the places our guests ask about most:

Ticket prices and opening hours change through the year, so we do not print them here. When you enquire, we check the current arrangement for your dates and list each ticket at cost in your quote.

How does our priority entrance work?

1. You tell us the sights and the date. Send us your wish list; the plan stays yours to change.
2. We plan the order around the gates. Closing days, prayer times at the mosques, and the hours when each line is at its worst all decide what comes first.
3. We buy the tickets in advance. Through our agency, for your exact party, at the official price, and itemized in your quote so you can see what each one costs.
4. Your guide meets you with the tickets in hand. In your hotel lobby, or at Galataport if you arrive by ship.
5. You walk past the ticket line. Straight to the entrance, through the priority lane wherever the site runs one, through the same bag check as everyone else, and inside.

That is the whole trick, and it is less glamorous than the name suggests: the time comes back to you because the ticketing is done in advance and your guide knows each gate's rhythm. On a busy day it is also the difference between a guide who spends the morning explaining the building and one who spends it standing in line.

Do skip-the-line tickets cost more?

No. We add nothing on the fast-pass tickets, and you buy the tickets at the same prices the Ministry of Culture and Tourism charges at the entrance. Where a palace administration or a foundation sets its own rates, you pay exactly what its own gate charges. The tickets appear in your quote at cost, separate from the tour price, so you can see what you are paying for.

The skip-the-line part is not sold on its own; it comes with the tour. The tour price covers your licensed guide, the private car and driver, and the planning, from €150 per group per day, per group rather than per person. If you would like to add something with its own ticket, such as the Harem at Topkapı, we buy that ahead too, so there is no second line once you are inside.

Are skip-the-line tickets in Istanbul worth it?

In high season, yes, at the big three. From spring to autumn, on cruise days and over holidays, the ticket lines at Hagia Sophia and Topkapı regularly run to an hour, and the Basilica Cistern's line outside can last longer than the visit itself. On a winter weekday morning the gain is smaller, sometimes only minutes, although having the tickets ready still means your time goes on the building rather than on the ticket office.

What no ticket can change

It helps to know the limits, so nobody is disappointed on the day:

• The security check. Every visitor passes the same bag scan, guided or not; it usually moves quickly.
• Prayer times. Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque pause visits around the daily prayers, and for longer at Friday midday. We plan around them.
• Capacity. Some places limit how many people are inside at once, and the Galata Tower lift is the obvious example. No agency can override that.

Is there an Istanbul skip-the-line pass?

Several city passes and museum passes are sold for Istanbul, and for a traveler planning to see a lot of museums alone over several days, one can be good value. Coverage differs from pass to pass and changes over time, because the big sights are run by different authorities: the national museums, the National Palaces Administration and religious foundations. It is worth checking exactly which sights a pass includes, and whether it gives a separate entrance, before you buy.

On a private tour with us you do not need one. We buy individual tickets for the sights you actually visit, at the official price, and the priority entrance comes with the day.
