The Ottoman palaces of Istanbul: Topkapı and Dolmabahçe in one day

Istanbul's two great Ottoman palaces, Topkapı and Dolmabahçe, are the same empire four hundred years apart, and seeing them on one day is the clearest lesson in Ottoman history Istanbul offers. In the morning, a fifteenth-century compound of courtyards and pavilions, where an empire that began in tents learned to rule in stone. In the afternoon, a nineteenth-century European palace of 285 rooms, finished as the treasury was running dry. From €150 per group, per day — not per person. We are honest that it is a full day, and that it cannot run on a Monday or a Tuesday.

What it costs, in full

From €150 per group, per day — not per person

  • Licensed local guide for the whole day included
  • Private car and driver, hotel or port pick-up and drop-off included
  • Planning, timed entries and the priority-entrance tickets included
  • Museum and palace entrance tickets at the gate price, no markup
  • Lunch, drinks and anything you choose to buy not included
  • Tips for your guide and driver customary, entirely up to you

Two people or six, the tour price is the same — it is the day you are hiring, not a seat. Entrance tickets are the only thing quoted separately, because museum prices change and because some parties add the Harem or the Cistern and others do not; we buy them in advance at the price on the gate and add them to your quote before you decide anything. Everything is quoted in euros, and nothing is paid until the day is agreed.

How the day runs

Timings below are the ones we actually use, not a brochure. Everything here is movable — it is your day, and your guide will happily rebuild it over breakfast.

  1. 08:30

    Pick-up

From your hotel or the ship. Topkapı fills from the gate inward all morning, so being among the first through it is worth more today than any other single decision.

  2. 09:00

    Topkapı: straight to the Harem

Most visitors do the courtyards first and meet the Harem crowd at midday. We go the other way. The Valide Sultan's courtyard, the sultan's own tiled chambers, the Imperial Hall: three hundred rooms of the family quarters, seen before the single narrow route clogs. This is the separate ticket, and the one we would never skip.

  3. 10:15

The second courtyard and the Divan

Back out through the Harem's exit into the courtyard where the empire was run. The Imperial Council met under the gilded eaves of the Divan, and the sultan listened from a grilled window above, unseen. Ten minutes here explains the next three hundred years better than any museum label.

  4. 10:45

The Treasury and the Sacred Relics

The third courtyard, the sultan's private world. The Spoonmaker's Diamond and the emerald-hilted Topkapı Dagger draw the crowd; the Chamber of the Sacred Relics, where the Qur'an is recited without pause, is quieter and stays with people longer. No photographs in the Relics.

  5. 11:45

    The fourth-courtyard terrace

Pavilions and a marble terrace above the meeting of the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. Look up the strait: Dolmabahçe is on that shore, about three kilometers away, and you will be inside it this afternoon. It is the hinge of the whole day.

  6. 12:30

    Drive to Beşiktaş, and lunch

Twenty to thirty minutes along the Golden Horn and up the Bosphorus shore. Lunch is near the palace in Beşiktaş, a neighborhood that eats well and cheaply. We point out three places at different prices, or sit down with you. Take the full hour: the afternoon is mostly on your feet.

  7. 14:00

Dolmabahçe gardens and the Clock Tower

The swan fountains, the formal beds and the marble gate onto the water. We brief you out here, because inside the route is fixed and moves at the palace's pace, not ours. Better to know what you are looking at before you are walking past it.

  8. 14:30

The state rooms and the Ceremonial Hall

The crystal staircase, with its Bohemian balustrade. Fourteen tonnes of gold leaf on the ceilings. Then the Ceremonial Hall, under a chandelier of about four and a half tonnes. After the morning's courtyards it looks like a different civilization, and that is precisely the point the sultans were making.

  9. 16:00

    Atatürk's room, and back

The room where Atatürk died in 1938, kept as it was, with the palace clocks stopped at 09:05. Then the car: hotel or Galataport, which is barely ten minutes from the Dolmabahçe gate, so ship guests are back at the gangway early.

What's included

  • A licensed local guide for the whole day, in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian, Italian or German
  • Private air-conditioned car and driver, including the drive between the two palaces
  • Hotel or cruise-port pick-up and drop-off
  • Skip-the-line priority entrance at Topkapı, the Topkapı Harem and Dolmabahçe — we hold the tickets before you arrive
  • All the planning — the Harem-first route at Topkapı and a Dolmabahçe entry time that fits your lunch

Not included

  • Palace entrance tickets — Topkapı, the Harem supplement and Dolmabahçe — bought in advance at the gate price, with no markup, and added to your quote
  • Lunch and drinks
  • Tips for your guide and driver — customary, but entirely up to you

Priority access · included

Skip the line at every gate

This day has three ticket lines to beat: the palace office in front of Topkapı's Gate of Salutation, the Harem's own ticket point inside, and the office at Dolmabahçe. Your guide holds all three tickets before you arrive, bought at the official price with nothing added, so you walk to the gates. Two things nobody can skip: the bag check at each entrance, and Dolmabahçe's fixed interior route, which moves at the palace's own pace.

Skip the line poster for Istanbul with Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Galata Tower: reserved tickets, fast pass and quick entry, less waiting and more Istanbul
  • Skip-the-line tickets — bought before your day, never at the gate with you standing in the line
  • Fast pass at the busiest sites — the priority lane wherever a site operates one
  • Priority entrance in every region — Istanbul, Ephesus, Cappadocia, Pamukkale and everywhere else we guide
  • Nothing added to the tickets — we add nothing on the fast-pass tickets. You pay exactly the official price charged at the entrance, set by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism or the administration that runs the site

To be precise about what this is: we skip the ticket line, not the security check, and no agency can override a site's own capacity limits.

How skip-the-line entry works in Istanbul

Where we meet, and what happens if plans change

  • Meeting point: Your hotel, or the cruise terminal at Galataport. Your guide is there before the time on the ticket, not after it.
  • Starts: around 08:30 — earlier if you want the sights before the crowds, later if you would rather sleep.
  • Ends: about 16:00, back at your hotel or wherever you would like to be dropped.
  • Group size: private — only your party, never a shared minibus.
  • Language: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Russian, Italian or German. Tell us which when you write, and your guide will be licensed in that language.
  • Cancellation: you pay nothing to book, so there is nothing to lose. Tell us as early as you can and we will move the day or cancel it, at no cost.

Staying in a hotel? Then the meeting point is your lobby and there is nothing to find — this map is for guests arriving by ship.

Shopping, if you would like to

Türkiye’s crafts are one of the pleasures of being here, and many guests ask to see a carpet, leather or jewelry atelier while they are in Istanbul. If you would like to, we are glad to include one — we use only established, fully insured workshops of the kind the cruise lines recommend, where you are welcome to watch the craft, enjoy the tea and take as long as you like. Nobody will hurry you and nobody will press you to buy. And if you would rather give the whole day to the sights, simply say so and we will. Read our guide to shopping in Istanbul.

The Ottoman palaces tour is one private day at Topkapı and Dolmabahçe, the two palaces the sultans ruled from, from €150 for the whole group. Most visitors see one and assume they have seen the other. They have not. These are two different answers to the same question, what power should look like, given by the same dynasty four hundred years apart, and they make the most sense on the same day.

Why see the two Ottoman palaces together?

Topkapı: the empire on its own terms

Topkapı was begun by Mehmed the Conqueror after 1453, and it does not look like a European palace because it was never trying to. There is no grand façade and no great staircase. Instead, four courtyards, each admitting fewer people than the last, with pavilions set in gardens like tents pitched for good. The empire was run from here for roughly four hundred years.

Dolmabahçe: the empire dressed for Europe

Dolmabahçe, finished in 1856 for Sultan Abdülmecid I, is one vast building on the Bosphorus shore: 285 rooms, 46 halls, six hamams, imported crystal and parquet. It was built for European ambassadors to look at, by a state anxious about how it looked to Europe, and its bill helped tip the treasury into default in 1875. Walk the courtyards in the morning and the Ceremonial Hall in the afternoon, and you have watched the Ottoman state change its mind about itself.

Which days can this tour run?

Only Wednesday to Sunday, and this is the single most useful fact on the page:

DayTopkapıDolmabahçeThis tour
MondayOpenClosedNot possible — we run Best of Istanbul instead
TuesdayClosedOpenNot possible — Dolmabahçe pairs well with a Bosphorus cruise
Wednesday to SundayOpenOpenRuns as printed

Public holidays can shorten opening hours, especially on the first morning of the Ramazan and Kurban Bayram holidays. We check your dates against the palace calendar when you write, before anything is booked.

The Harem: the separate ticket worth paying for

At Topkapı the Harem is ticketed separately from the palace, and we include it unless you ask us not to. Forget the nineteenth-century paintings. The Harem was the family quarters, a dense, tiled maze where the Valide Sultan, the sultan's mother, often held more real power than anyone in the Divan outside. It also has a single narrow route, which is why we go there first, at opening, before the crowd finishes the second courtyard. Dolmabahçe has a Harem section too. On this day we usually give that time to the state rooms instead, but if you want both, tell us and we start earlier.

What to expect inside Dolmabahçe

Three honest warnings, so nothing surprises you on the day:

  • The route inside is fixed. Visitors move through the state rooms in groups, along one route, at the palace's pace. You cannot double back to a room you liked, which is why your guide briefs you in the gardens first.
  • Photography is restricted inside. The gardens, the Clock Tower and the gate onto the water are where the photographs are.
  • It is closed on Mondays, and it fills through the afternoon. We time your entry around lunch so the wait is in a restaurant, not a line.

What does the Ottoman palaces tour cost?

From €150 per group, per day — not per person. Two travelers or six, the guide and the car cost the same.

Prices for the palaces are set by the National Palaces Administration and revised often, so we print no ticket figure here. Ask us and we will give you the current one. Our skip-the-line guide explains exactly what the priority entrance does and does not save.

Can you change the day?

Always: it is your day, and the itinerary above is a shape, not a contract. Guests who love architecture often swap the Treasury for the Süleymaniye Mosque, Sinan's masterpiece and a few minutes from Topkapı. Others want Hagia Sophia first thing, with Topkapı straight after, which works on a long day for early risers. After Dolmabahçe, Ortaköy is ten minutes up the shore for tea under the bridge. The two palaces fill this day, so there is no workshop visit in the plan, but if you would like to see a carpet, leather or jewelry atelier, we are glad to add one: established, fully insured addresses of the kind the cruise lines recommend, where you take as long as you like and are never obliged to buy.

Can cruise guests do this tour?

Yes, and it suits them better than most. Galataport is barely ten minutes from Dolmabahçe, so the afternoon finishes almost at the gangway. On a day call we build the plan backward from your all-aboard time; our shore excursion page explains how. If this is your first day in Istanbul and you have only one, take the Best of Istanbul tour instead, which keeps Topkapı and adds Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque in the Sultanahmet old city. The palaces day is the right second day, or the right first one for anyone who came for the Ottomans.

See all our private Istanbul tours, or send us your dates and we will make sure none of them is a Monday or a Tuesday. From €150 per group per day, both palaces, tickets in hand.

Ottoman Palaces Day — frequently asked questions

Is it too much to see Topkapı and Dolmabahçe in one day?
For most people, no, provided the day is built properly, and that is the job we take on. Topkapı takes the morning, from opening, with the Harem first. Then comes a full sit-down lunch and a car ride between the two, and Dolmabahçe takes the afternoon, where the fixed route keeps the visit to around two hours. What makes two palaces exhausting is doing them back to back on foot with no break, and this day never does that. If your party tires easily, we drop the Treasury line rather than rush the Harem.
Is the Topkapı Harem worth the extra ticket?
Yes, and it is included in every version of this day we plan unless you tell us otherwise. The Harem is ticketed separately from the palace, and it is the part visitors who skip it most often regret: the family quarters where the sultan's mother held real power, tiled from floor to dome. We buy the Harem ticket together with the palace ticket, at the official price with no markup, so there is no second line once you are inside.
Topkapı or Dolmabahçe: which is better if we can only do one?
Topkapı, for a first visit with limited time. It is the older and larger story: four courtyards, the Harem, the Treasury and the view over the water. Dolmabahçe is best understood as the answer to it, which is why we pair them. If you have a day to give to palaces, the pair is worth far more than either alone. If you only have half a day, our Topkapı Palace guide explains how to do that one well.
Can you take photos inside the palaces?
At Topkapı, yes, in the courtyards, the Harem and most rooms, but never in the Chamber of the Sacred Relics, and the Treasury rules can change. At Dolmabahçe, photography is restricted inside the palace, and the rule has been enforced more and less strictly over the years. Your guide tells you that day's rule at the door. The gardens, the Clock Tower and the gate onto the Bosphorus are all fair game, and they are the best photographs of the afternoon anyway.
How much walking is involved on the Ottoman palaces tour?
About five kilometers across the day. Topkapı is the harder half: large, mostly open-air and paved in uneven stone, with little shade in summer. Dolmabahçe is indoors, with stairs, including the crystal staircase, on a route you cannot shorten once you start. The car does the three kilometers between them. Flat, comfortable shoes matter more today than on any other tour we run, and with limited mobility tell us first, because we shape the day before it starts.
Does skip-the-line entry help at both palaces?
Yes, at three separate ticket points: the Topkapı palace office, the Harem ticket inside, and the Dolmabahçe office. We buy all three in advance at the price the Ministry charges at the gate, with nothing added, and you walk to the entrance. What it cannot skip is the bag check at each gate, which usually moves quickly. Dolmabahçe's interior also runs on a fixed route and its own capacity, so no agency can rush you through the inside.
