How many hours do you actually need?
This is the only question that matters, and we would rather talk you out of a bad idea than sell you a stressful one.
Under six hours: we generally advise against leaving the airport. By the time you clear passport control, reach the city and return with a safe margin, you would have perhaps an hour in Istanbul and a great deal of anxiety.
Six to eight hours: workable, and worth it. Realistically that means one area — Sultanahmet — and two or three sights: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Hippodrome, which stand within a few minutes' walk of each other. It is a real visit, not a token one.
Eight to twelve hours: comfortable. Add the Basilica Cistern or the Grand Bazaar, or trade the old city for a Bosphorus cruise and lunch by the water.
Twelve hours or more: you can see a great deal, including Topkapı Palace, and still eat properly.
Getting from Istanbul Airport to the city
Istanbul Airport (IST) sits on the European side, north-west of the city. By private car the old city is usually forty-five to seventy minutes each way, depending heavily on the hour — the run into town at eight in the morning is a different proposition from midday. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side and generally further from Sultanahmet, roughly sixty to ninety minutes, sometimes more.
We plan layover days around the actual traffic pattern for your hours, and we return you to the terminal with a deliberate margin rather than cutting it fine. A layover tour that makes you miss a flight is not a tour, it is a disaster, and the whole design of the day is built around not doing that.
The practical checklist
Visa. Check your nationality's requirements for entering Türkiye before you fly. Many travellers need nothing or can get an e-Visa online in minutes; some need more. This is the single most common reason a layover plan falls apart at passport control.
Baggage. If your bags are checked through to your final destination you need do nothing. If not, there are left-luggage facilities at the airport — do not drag suitcases around Sultanahmet.
Your flight's terms. Make sure leaving the transit area is permitted on your ticket and that you have time to re-clear security. Note also that some airlines offer complimentary tours or hotel arrangements for long connections — if you qualify for one of those and it suits you, take it; we will happily tell you so.
Mosque dress. Shoulders and knees covered, scarf for women. Easy to pack in hand luggage.
Sleep. If you have flown overnight and are exchanging sleep for sightseeing, be honest with yourself about how much you will enjoy it.
Why a private layover tour rather than a taxi and a map
On a normal day in Istanbul you can afford to get lost; on a layover you cannot. The value of a private car and a licensed guide here is almost entirely about certainty: someone meets you in arrivals, the vehicle is waiting, the route is planned around the traffic, the tickets are already arranged, and someone is watching the clock so that you do not have to. You get to look at Hagia Sophia instead of at your phone.
