If you do only five things in Istanbul, make them Hagia Sophia, the Bosphorus, Topkapı Palace, the Grand Bazaar and one evening walking Galata. Everything below that line is a matter of taste and time. What follows is the honest ranking we give our own guests — including the things we would tell you to skip.

The five you should not miss

1. Hagia Sophia. Nearly 1,500 years old and still the room that surprises people most. Go first thing.
2. The Bosphorus. Istanbul only makes sense from the water. Half a day, and the best half.
3. Topkapı Palace. Give it three hours and pay for the Harem.
4. The Grand Bazaar. Not for the shopping necessarily — for the building and the theater of it.
5. Galata and Karaköy in the evening. Where the city stops being a monument and starts being a place people live.

The underrated ones

These are the things guests thank us for afterwards, and almost nobody arrives asking for:

• The Süleymaniye Mosque. Free, nearly empty, and a finer building than the Blue Mosque. The terrace has the best view in the old city.
• The Chora mosaics. The finest Byzantine art left anywhere, and a fraction of the crowd.
• Balat and Fener. Colored houses, antique shops, and a real neighborhood rather than a set.
• The Asian side. Kadıköy's market and the ferry crossing cost almost nothing and change how you see the city.
• A hamam. The best possible end to a day of cobbles.

What to skip, honestly

We would rather say this than have you waste an afternoon. The very cheap ninety-minute "Bosphorus cruises" sold along the waterfront turn back before the strait gets interesting — go further or take the public ferry instead. Dinner-with-belly-dancing packages are built around the show rather than the cooking, so set your expectations there. And on a short trip, a second palace is usually a mistake: one is memorable, two in a day blur together.

Best things to do in Istanbul with children

Istanbul is easier with children than it looks, provided you lean on boats and open space. The Basilica Cistern is genuinely exciting — dim, echoing, with carp in the water and a Medusa head to find. Ferries count as an attraction rather than transport. The Princes' Islands have no cars and plenty of room to run. Things to do near Istanbul Airport

If you are stuck with a long connection rather than a stay, you can still see the city — the airport is around 45–60 minutes from Sultanahmet depending on traffic, so a six-hour layover is workable and a four-hour one is not. How to fit them into the days you have

The mistake almost everyone makes is scattering — an hour lost in traffic between two sights is an hour not spent looking at anything. Group by district instead: Sultanahmet on one day, the Bosphorus and Galata on another, a neighborhood on a third.
